I’ll make a video on this later, but this is how I like to make Shirley temples. They’re a sweet treat for when you want to feel fancy, but aren’t in the mood for alcohol.
- Orange juice
- Ginger ale, Sprite, or Seven-Up
- Maraschino cherries
- (Optional) Orange or lemon slice
- Start by filling a glass about halfway with ginger ale, Sprite, or Seven-Up. Most places use ginger ale, but I like using Sprite. Seven-Up will add a hint of lemony flavour if you prefer that.
- Add orange juice (I like how it tastes with Five Alive peach citrus) until it colours the pop you just poured in. This may take practice but you’re aiming for the two flavours to be balanced equally.
- You don’t need a whole lot of grenadine! This stuff is really sweet and will turn your drink bright red if you pour too quickly. A good rule of thumb is to only pour until you see some pretty gradation happening between red and yellow—or go for an overall coral colour—not totally red.
- Add maraschinos as desired. Most places only give you one. These will settle on the bottom and absorb the other flavours.
- Add ice cubes as desired. This is a good opportunity to make use of any of those novelty ice cube trays that make ice shaped like gems (if you have one).
- Try to avoid buying orange juice with pulp, unless you’re the type that likes it
- Avoid shaking or stirring to preserve carbonation
- Orange juice will make the mixture tangier than if you use Five Alive
- If you want to go totally nuts, add a splash of lemon juice
- You could use lemonade instead of orange juice, but how good it tastes will depend on how sweet or tangy the lemonade you bought, and your preference
